Most Anticipated Releases of 2020

Updated: Feb 14, 2020

I hit a really bad reading slump in 2019. Thank God, I'm now pulling myself out of it.

I have a lot of hope for 2020 because we have some great releases coming out this year! Some of these are from debut authors releasing their first books, and others are from seasoned authors releasing their newest ones!

Here's my list of the books I'm most excited to read this upcoming year (in no particular order) Make sure to click the Goodreads and Barnes and Noble links I left under the quotes to learn more about these upcoming releases:

1. Imagine Me by Tahereh Mafi

"The day of reckoning for the Reestablishment is coming. But she may not get to choose what side she fights on."

This is the sixth and final book to Tahereh Mafi's Shatter Me series. This series was originally only supposed to be a trilogy, so when Tahereh announced that she was writing and releasing three more books in the series, I was ecstatic. One thing that I love is about the series is that even though the last three books were written years after the original three, it doesn't feel like a different series and the characters have developed but not changed to be unrecognizable.

Release Date: March 31, 2020

2. Love & Olives by Jenna Evans Welch

"But not everything on the Greek island is as perfect as it seems. Because as Evie slowly begins to discover, her father may not have invited her to Greece for Atlantis, but for something much more important."

Love & Olives is the third and final installment of Jenna Evans Welch's trilogy. The first two books in the trilogy are titled Love & Gelato and Love & Luck, which respectively take place in Italy and Ireland. This third one takes place in Greece. I love books that take place in other countries and use the setting to it's advantage and Jenna Evans Welch does a fantastic job at incorporating these different locations into the actual story. Also, each book has a different main character, but they're all intertwined so I can't wait to see how she does that for this book!

Release Date: July 7, 2020

3. All The Stars and Teeth by Adalyn Grace

"Set in a kingdom where danger lurks beneath the sea, mermaids seek vengeance with song, and magic is a choice, Adalyn Grace’s All the Stars and Teeth is a thrilling fantasy for fans of Stephanie Garber’s Caraval and Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass series."

Adalyn Grace's debut novel, All the Stars and Teeth is a fantasy novel about a topic that is often overlooked in YA fantasy stories: mermaids and pirates. This is the story of Amora, the princess of an island kingdom. After a demonstration of her magic goes awry, Amora is forced to flee her kingdom where she enlists the help of a mysterious pirate. This sounds like nothing I've read so far and is the first in what will be a duology. I can't wait to check out Adalyn Grace's writing style!

Release Date: February 4, 2020

4. The Paper Girl of Paris by Jordyn Taylor

"When her grandmother passed away two months ago, she left Alice an apartment in France that no one knew existed. An apartment that has been locked for more than seventy years."

I love historical fiction books if they're done right, but none have seemed to appeal to me lately, until I heard about The Paper Girl of Paris by Jordyn Taylor, another debut author. This story takes place both in the present day and in the past. Sixteen-year-old Alice is spending the summer in Paris, because her grandmother left her an apartment there that no one knew about. With the help of a student in Paris, she begins to look into her grandmother's secretive history and unravels secrets about both her grandmother's past and her family in present day. This book sounds so fun and I cannot wait to get my hands on it!

Release Date: May 26, 2020

5. Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare

"When disaster strikes the Shadowhunters, James, Cordelia and their friends are plunged into a wild adventure which will reveal dark and incredible powers, and the true cruel price of being a hero."

I know, I know, nobody is surprised, but I mean, come on, how could I not have a Cassandra Clare book on this list??? You guessed it, Chain of Gold is the first in yet another trilogy by the wonderfully talented Cassie Clare. This one goes back to London, just like The Infernal Devices trilogy. It follows the adventures of Will and Tessa's children. Cassie is another one of those authors who really uses the setting of her stories to her advantage. I can't wait to be back in London and see the return of some of our all time favorite Shadowhunters and Downworlders, as well as some brand new ones.

Release Date: March 3, 2020

6. Red Hood by Elana K. Arnold

"A wolf attacks. Bisou fights back. A new moon rises. And with it, questions. About the blood in Bisou’s past and on her hands as she stumbles home. About broken boys and vicious wolves. About girls lost in the woods—frightened, but not alone."

This next book, as you might have guessed, is a take on the classic, Little Red Riding Hood. Notice how I said, it's a take on it, because it's not exactly a retelling. It takes place after the original story. I love books that are based on classics and fairytales, especially when they're given an edge or a twist. You might be familiar with Elana K. Arnold if you've read or heard of her books, Damsel, A Boy Called Bat, What Girls Are Made Of, Sacred, or any of her other books. I'm super excited to read Red Hood, because I don't feel like we get enough of these types of stories based on fairytales.

Release Date: February 25, 2020

7. We Ride Upon Sticks by Quan Barry

"But things start to look up when the team’s goalie discovers a book that will change both the course of the season as well as each player’s life."

I was so hooked when I found out what this book was about. This is another one that takes place in two timelines: 1980's and 1690's. Both in the Boston/Salem area. Basically, it combines a 1980's girls field hockey team with the Salem Witch Trials...what???? Need I say more? I will most definitely be picking this one up when it's released.

Release Date: March 3, 2020

8. Thorn by Intisar Khanani

"With the fate of the kingdom at stake, Alyrra is caught between two worlds and ultimately must decide who she is, and what she stands for."

Thorn is actually a retelling of the slightly lesser well known story, Goose Girl. I, myself, don't know much about the original story, but this one seems very interesting. It follow Alyrra, who becomes the princess without really wanting to. When this is taken away from her unjustly and without anyone knowing, she is thrilled at first. However, when she learns of dark threats, she has to decide if she should reclaim the throne or remain a goose girl.

Release Date: March 24, 2020

9. The Betrothed by Kiera Cass

"A would-be queen. A handsome young king. A perfect match…or is it?"

This title and author combo may seem familiar to some. If it is, then you are likely familiar with The Selection series by Kiera Cass. This book is the start of her newest series which follows a different kingdom and royal family. When Hollis is chosen by the King, she is excited as this is what she thought she wanted, but questions this once she wonders if life as royalty is all it's cracked up to be.

Release Date: May 5, 2020

10. Redemption Prep by Samuel Miller

"As the search continues, the students realize that they’re not the only ones trying to hide something. Redemption Prep has secrets, too—secrets bigger than any of the students could have imagined, and Emma could be the key to finding out the truth… if anyone can find her."

There's something about boarding school mysteries that just hooks me in. This one is described as being Twin Peaks meets Riverdale. Emma, a student, at Redemption Prep goes missing, and three of the people closest to her are desperate to find her, they all have secrets to hide, that she may or may not be a part of. After reading reviews that describe this book as a mystery with 90's culture, I was sold.

Release Date: April 14, 2020

11. Clique Bait by Ann Valett

"Now all that’s left to do is uncover their deepest, darkest secrets and reveal them to the world."

This one has been described as Pretty Little Liars, Burn for Burn, and Gossip Girl by some. Ann Valett is another debut author on this list. This book sounds like an interesting YA contemporary. It's a book set in a high school, which sometimes can be pretty cheesy, but this one doesn't sound like it will be. I'm really excited to read this one and see what Ann Valett's writing style is like.

Release Date: April 28, 2020

12. The Kingdom of Back by Marie Lu

"Two siblings. Two brilliant talents. But only one Mozart." - Goodreads

This is a book that seems to be on everyone's TBR list, and for good reason. It's another historical fiction novel. This one follows the older sister of Mozart, who has just as much talent, but is forced to live in his shadow. She wants to be a famous composer, which is not an easy task, especially for a girl in the 18th century, which is why she takes a mysterious stranger up on his offer, but every deal has a price. (Marie Lu is the brilliant author of the Legend trilogy)

Release Date: March 3, 2020

13. My Calamity Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows

"Welcome to 1876 and a rootin’-tootin’ America bursting with gunslingers, outlaws, and garou."

For those of you who are unfamiliar with The Lady Janies series, this is the third installment. Each book in the series, cowritten by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows, follows a different historical Jane, fictional or not, and each takes place in a very different setting. As the cover says, hold on to your hats, because this book takes place in wild west America. I'm so excited for this, because these books are always a joy to read.

Release Date: June 2, 2020
