Book Cover Changes

Updated: Jan 19, 2020

Let's be real... we've all bought books because they have gorgeous covers. I most likely won't even pick up a book to read what it's about if I don't immediately love the cover. Sometimes covers undergo design changes which is exactly what this post is about. Here I discuss what I like in covers and whether I like the newer ones or the originals. ALSO, keep reading, this post is completely spoiler-free!!

The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare

Original: New:

Anyone who knows me knows that Cassandra Clare is probably my favorite author... like ever. Pick up her books! Do it... ANYWAYS, don't let the horrible original cover of City of Bones steer you away! The series is great! When I first picked up the books to be completely honest... I bought them on my Nook. I didn't want that cover. That book screams cheesy cringey middle school romance... AND THAT'S NOT THIS SERIES! Instead it's a Young Adult Fantasy series. The new cover convey's this perfectly. It's Jace using a stele (a tool Shadowhunters use) and it shows more of the badass-ness of the series. Same goes for the rest of the series that underwent this cover change! I have the boxset with these covers on my bookshelf and the spines together make an image. I love it! Shirtless guys on the cover of books- thumbs down from me y'all.

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Original: New:

Another one of my favorite series that has me go, what were they thinking with this first cover??? Luckily I read this series after the second cover was published so I never got the first cover. If I had I would've been so mad because my covers wouldn't have matched. They never even printed the old covers for the rest of the series. The old one - a girl... in a white dress... in a snow storm? Nothing to do with this story. New cover - I don't fully get the eye concept to be honest but at least the aesthetic of these covers match the feel of the stories, and each cover in the series matches!!

The Diviners by Libba Bray

Original: New:

I haven't actually read the Diviners yet but it's on my TBR (To Be Read) Pile. The old cover was cool. Another eye cover... maybe it has something to do with the story this time? I don't know let me know in the comments if you've read it and the eye makes sense. But it's a pretty cover nonetheless. The blue with the city in the background is super pretty. This new cover - it's a weird purple and the people are glowing... what? Not my taste.

^Winner: Original Cover!!!^

Royals/Prince Charming by Rachel Hawkins

Original: New:

I think everyone who has talked about cover changes recently has talked A LOT about Royals/Prince Charming by Rachel Hawkins. Yes, you read that right. The original was so bad that it underwent not only a cover change but a title change as well!!! The old one literally looks like it was quite possibly designed by someone who designs those cringey tween magazines. What were they thinking? The shade of pink: hurtful to the eyes. The title: this title doesn't actually bother me so much. The font: Rhinestones?? What is this??? The new cover is super cute with the pastel pink that plays off the red super well. Disclaimer: I haven't read this book yet!

^Winner: NEW COVER DUHHHH!!!^

The Covenant Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Original: New:

The Covenant Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout is a series that I did read years ago so I can't remember the exact series too well. I liked the theming of the old book covers. They all had a sort of wispy image (like the flower) and were each a different color that looked really good together. The new covers feel much more high fantasy than the books actually are. I don't hate the new covers but they don't match the feel of the series.

^Winner: Original Cover!!!^

The Luxe Series by Anna Godbersen

Original: New:

The Luxe by Anna Godbersen is a series that I'm very late to, I'm on the second book Rumors. Now if you know me, you know the winner to this one already. I hate hate hate real people on the covers. I like the new ones' color schemes, they're each a different color, (the first- pink, the second- purple, the third- green, and the fourth- blue). Each cover has similar designs and I can't wait for them to look so pretty next to each other on my bookshelf!

^Winner: New Cover!!!^

The Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead

Original: New:

BLEGH. Okay, I have to be honest, I'm one of the few who actually really didn't like The Vampire Academy series. I didn't like the book itself and I feel the same way about the cover. The cover is literally just a girl looking over her shoulder? (Again, people on the cover, sensing a theme here?) So when they re-vamp-ed (get it? Vampire Academy?) Anyways, when they revamped the cover they literally changed the font, put a weird VA and made each of them a different color... This one is red. Not good then, not good now.

^Winner: Ummm... new? Original? Yea it's a neither for this one.^

The Beauty That Remains by Ashley Woodfolk

Original: New:

Another TBR Book!!! Okay so I haven't read this one yet but I actually do like both covers for this one. The new cover however does have more to it. The original is just colorful geometric shapes. While it's really pretty, it doesn't have depth. The new one however does have depth and I really like the way the font plays off the background and it's colors. The placement of the characters on the cover are also well done.

^Winner: New Cover!!!^

All We Can Do Is Wait by Richard Lawson

Original: New:

Last but not least.... another TBR Book! Okay so here's what I know: a bridge collapses and this takes place in a hospital waiting room and follows the people who are related to/close with people that were hurt in said collapse, and it's a 2019 release! So, I really like the concept of the new cover but... it's boring, the original actually gives you more of that waiting room feel whereas the new one feels more like a patient feel. I actually ordered this in hard cover because it still comes in the original cover for hard cover!

^Winner: Original Cover!!!^

That's it for cover changes!!! Here's my question: what are some of your absolute favorite cover changes??? And, let me know if there's more you want me to talk about! I'd love to do a Part 2 for this!
